Elegance in design is certainly achieved through the right proportions, But sometimes even exaggeration can create elegance. In this case, we aimed to find the right balance between comfort and proportion. L’eleganza nel design è sicuramente raggiunta con le proporzioni corrette oppure a volte anche nell’esagerazione si può creare un’eleganza. In questo caso abbiamo cercato di trovare l’equilibrio giusto tra la comodità e la proporzione.
“Mix and match, with elegance”
This is our first collaboration with Cierre, and this year we are presenting the Catarina armchair. We immediately had a good feeling with Cierre, who gave us a very clear brief. They explained the company’s artisanal skills very well, so this initial approach was easy. È la nostra prima collaborazione con Cierre e quest’anno presentiamo la poltrona Catarina. Ci siamo trovate subito bene con Cierre che ci ha dato un Brief molto preciso. Ci ha spiegato bene tutte le capacità artigianali dell’azienda e quindi è stato semplice questo primo approccio.
Catarina is inspired by furniture from the 1950s and 60s, especially the armchairs designed by Gio Ponti, which feature very feminine, rounded shapes. However, they also strike a balance between more defined, sharp lines and the soft form, which is further enhanced. The legs, made of solid walnut, are also rounded or oval, emphasizing the balance between masculine and feminine. We decided to work with a three-legged design, as it creates a lightness that is much harder to achieve with four legs. Catarina è ispirata agli arredi degli anni 50 e 60, soprattutto alle poltrone che ha disegnato Gio Ponti che hanno queste forme molto femminili, molto arrotondate, però che hanno un equilibrio tra delle forme più precise, taglienti e la forma morbida che viene ancora più esaltata. Anche le gambe in massello di noce sono arrotondate o ovali ed accentuano l’equilibrio del maschile e femminile. Abbiamo deciso di lavorare sull’aspetto delle tre gambe, perché creano una leggerezza che con le quattro gambe è molto più difficile da raggiungere.

For us, working in harmony came very naturally because we’ve been working together for twenty years. We grew up together, even though we come from very different backgrounds. We argue, we debate—but that’s exactly our strength: having a perspective that’s different from our own. We enjoy collaborating with companies because it gives us yet another point of view. Per noi è stato molto naturale lavorare in sintonia perché lavoriamo ormai insieme da vent’anni, siamo cresciute insieme anche se veniamo da esperienze molto diverse. Llitighiamo, discutiamo però è proprio questa la nostra forza, avere un altro punto di vista diverso da qulello personale. Ci piace la collaborazione con le aziende, perché ci permette di avere un altro punto di vista.
"The serene and discreet elegance, which is the key word of many of our productions ranging from upholstered furniture to bookcases, from lights to chairs, living systems, bathroom and kitchen ... We have translated it into purity, balance of lines and shapes, lightness and airiness. Probably our more feminine side translates into a sweet, soft, but also contemporary, pragmatic sign." Bernhardt-Vella was founded in 2008 by the German designer Ellen Bernhardt and the Italian interior designer Paola Vella. The firm is based in Milan. Their starting point is research as a maieutic process, they take cues that can come from the art world, from the masters of the past as well as from architecture, and from this starting point they create their style, a recognizable style, but always personal. "When we start to think of a new project we think of it by projecting it into a hypothetical space. Working often on projects of different scale, from the object to the booths and houses, it is natural to think about the use of the object or vice versa. We like to create surprising contrasts: experimenting with color in all its facets, neon light with antique paintings, precious fabrics with industrial resin, and antique furniture with extravagant plants." Therefore they prefer flexible products that can blend and cohabit in harmony with other pieces of different eras. To achieve this goal they discuss and work with four hands, amplifying the creative leverage that derives from their different cultural backgrounds. "Working with leading companies in the sector, we are encouraged to find highly performing ergonomic lighting solutions. Without, however, renouncing to give attention to details. For example, brass, glass, etc. appears like an embroidery or an insert to create a precious, noble sign, almost a reference to history and the patina of time." "L’eleganza serena e discreta, che è la parola chiave di molte delle nostre produzioni – dai mobili imbottiti alle librerie, dalle luci alle sedie, ai sistemi living, al bagno e alla cucina... L’abbiamo tradotta in purezza, equilibrio di linee e forme, leggerezza e ariosità. Probabilmente, il nostro lato più femminile si esprime in un segno dolce, morbido, ma anche contemporaneo e pragmatico." Bernhardt-Vella è stata fondata nel 2008 dalla designer tedesca Ellen Bernhardt e dall’interior designer italiana Paola Vella. Lo studio ha sede a Milano. Il loro punto di partenza è la ricerca come processo maieutico: traggono ispirazione dal mondo dell’arte, dai maestri del passato così come dall’architettura e, da questa base, creano il loro stile, uno stile riconoscibile ma sempre personale. "Quando iniziamo a pensare a un nuovo progetto, lo immaginiamo proiettato in uno spazio ipotetico. Lavorando spesso su progetti di scala diversa, dall’oggetto agli stand fino alle abitazioni, è naturale pensare all’uso dell’oggetto o viceversa. Ci piace creare contrasti sorprendenti: sperimentare il colore in tutte le sue sfumature, la luce al neon accostata a dipinti antichi, tessuti preziosi con resine industriali, mobili d’epoca con piante eccentriche." Per questo preferiscono prodotti flessibili, capaci di fondersi e convivere armoniosamente con pezzi di epoche diverse. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo, discutono e lavorano a quattro mani, amplificando la leva creativa derivante dai loro differenti background culturali. "Lavorando con aziende leader del settore, siamo stimolate a trovare soluzioni di illuminazione ergonomica altamente performanti. Senza, però, rinunciare all’attenzione per i dettagli. Per esempio, l’ottone, il vetro, ecc. appaiono come un ricamo o un inserto per creare un segno prezioso, nobile, quasi un riferimento alla storia e alla patina del tempo."
